Making Tax Digital Checker
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is live. Enter your gross income and your residence position and see your start date in seconds, including the SA109 deferral that non-resident landlords keep missing.
Add your GROSS rents and gross self-employment turnover together, before any expenses. Profit is not the test.
Indicative only. Thresholds use qualifying income (gross self-employment plus property income); exemptions and the non-resident easement carry detailed conditions.
Your MTD position
Deferred to April 2027 (automatic)
Start date on these answers: 6 April 2027
- Your qualifying income is over £50,000, which mandated Making Tax Digital from 6 April 2026, but because you filed the SA109 residence pages for 2024/25 you were deferred automatically until April 2027.
- Use the year wisely: pick software, digitise your records and rehearse a quarter before it counts.
- This is an indication, not advice: the thresholds, exemptions and the non-resident easement have detailed conditions covered in our full MTD guide.

How the MTD start dates work
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax replaces the single annual Self Assessment return with digital record-keeping, quarterly software updates and a year-end final declaration. It started on 6 April 2026 for people whose qualifying income, gross self-employment turnover plus gross property income before expenses, exceeds £50,000. The £30,000 wave follows from April 2027, with £20,000 legislated to follow after that.
The wrinkle for expats and non-resident landlords: people who filed the SA109 residence pages for 2024/25 were deferred automatically until April 2027, but those leaving the UK more recently must apply for that easement rather than receiving it by default. Getting the start date wrong builds penalty points quarter after quarter, which is why it is worth pinning down early.
Quarterly filing, handled
MTD turns one filing a year into five. We run the digital records and the quarterly cycle for non-resident landlords end to end, on a fixed fee agreed upfront, wherever you live. Book a free clarity call.
