Expat & Non-Resident Tax: Bahrain
A Chartered Tax Adviser for the UK side of life in Bahrain
UK tax returns, residence advice and move planning for people moving between the UK and Bahrain, handled remotely by a Chartered Tax Adviser on fixed fees agreed upfront.
The Short Answer
Horizon UK Tax Solutions is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) practice that handles the UK side of a move to or from Bahrain: the departure-year return, the residence position, UK property and pensions left behind, and any later return. Bahrain charges no personal income tax, so once you are properly UK non-resident your salary can be taxed nowhere. The work is in that word properly. Residence is decided by the Statutory Residence Test, not the plane ticket, and the UK still taxes rent from a UK let, gains on UK residential property, and an estate that can stay within UK inheritance tax for years after you leave.
Deadlines are unforgiving. Sell a UK home from Manama and a Non-Resident Capital Gains Tax return is due within 60 days of completion. UK rent falls under the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme, so your agent may withhold basic-rate tax until HMRC approves your NRL1. A UK private pension from past employment can be paid gross under the UK to Bahrain treaty, but only once HMRC accepts the claim and changes the code. Come back within five full tax years, having been UK resident in at least four of the seven tax years before you left, and certain gains banked in Bahrain can land in your return for the year you resume residence. Horizon runs all of this, plus the SA109 split-year claim HMRC's free online service cannot file.
Everything is handled remotely, with year-round support and direct access to the adviser: a CTA with over 10 years of experience, including 7 at a Big Four firm. Fees are fixed and agreed in writing before any work starts. Non-resident and expat tax returns are £550. Personal tax returns start from £350 and complex returns from £750, and advisory work is quoted as a fixed fee upfront. Never an hourly rate. Where anything has to be filed or advised on inside Bahrain, Horizon coordinates vetted local specialists. The practice is rated 5.0 on Google across 19 reviews, and the first conversation is a free 30-minute clarity call.
What We Do
Handled for you, end to end
- Departure-year Self Assessment with the SA109 residence pages and the split-year claim, so Bahrain earnings after you leave are not taxed as UK-resident income
- Statutory Residence Test analysis and UK day-count planning, because a Bahrain Golden Residency visa with no minimum stay does nothing for your UK position
- NRL1 applications so HMRC approves your UK rent to be paid gross, and the non-resident landlord return that reports it each year
- Non-Resident Capital Gains Tax returns within 60 days of completing a UK property sale, with the computation choice for property held before April 2015
- Treaty claims on UK private pensions under Article 17, using form DT-Individual to secure an NT code so the pension is paid without UK tax
- Arrival planning for the move from Bahrain to the UK: the arriver split-year cases, and the five-year return trap mapped before you sell anything
