The Short Answer

Horizon UK Tax Solutions is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) practice in London handling the UK tax side of a move between the UK and Germany: British people heading to Germany, people living there with UK rent, property or pensions, and people arriving in the UK from Germany. Three things decide most of what you owe. The Statutory Residence Test sets when you stop (or start) being UK resident, not your visa or your flight date. UK rental income and gains on UK property stay UK-taxable after you leave. And the UK-Germany double tax treaty decides where your UK pension is taxed, by pension type.

The traps: timing and paperwork. Split-year treatment is not a choice: you meet a statutory case or not, and you claim it on the SA109 pages of your departure-year return, which HMRC's free online service cannot file. Sell UK residential property and you report and pay within 60 days of completion, even with no tax due. Return within five years and the temporary non-residence rule can tax gains realised abroad, if you were UK resident in at least four of the seven tax years before you left. We handle all of it: residence, the departure-year return, the NRL1 so rent can arrive gross, the 60-day report and your pension's treaty position.

Everything is handled remotely from London, with year-round support and direct access to the adviser: a CTA with over 10 years of experience, 7 at a Big Four firm. Fees are fixed and agreed in writing before any work starts. A non-resident or expat tax return is £550 fixed. Complex returns start from £750, and planning work is quoted as a fixed fee upfront. Never an hourly rate. Where filing or advice has to happen in Germany, we coordinate a vetted local specialist and lead on the UK and cross-border position. Rated 5.0 on Google from 19 reviews, with clients across six continents. Start with a free 30-minute clarity call.

What We Do

Handled for you, end to end

  • Departure planning and the departure-year return: your Statutory Residence Test position, the split-year claim on the SA109 pages, and disposal timing against the 5-year rule.
  • NRL1 registration so your UK rent can be paid gross once HMRC approves, and the annual non-resident landlord return with mortgage interest relieved at the 20% basic rate.
  • The 60-day Non-Resident Capital Gains Tax report when you sell UK residential property from Germany, with April 2015 rebasing for property held before then.
  • Your UK pension under the UK-Germany treaty: which country taxes it by pension type, and the treaty claim or NT PAYE code where appropriate.
  • Arrival-year planning if you are moving to the UK from Germany: the arriver split-year cases, your UK day count and your first UK return.
  • Coordination with a vetted local adviser in Germany for German registration and filing, while we lead on the UK and cross-border position.
