Expat & Non-Resident Tax: Malaysia
A Chartered Tax Adviser for UK expats in Malaysia and the move either way
UK tax returns, residency and treaty planning for people moving to Malaysia, living there with UK income or pensions, or moving to the UK. Fixed fees, agreed first.
The Short Answer
Horizon UK Tax Solutions is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) practice for the UK side of a life connected to Malaysia: the departure-year return, the non-resident returns for UK rent and pensions while you live there, and arrival-year planning if you move the other way. Three things decide the bill. Whether you have broken UK residence under the Statutory Residence Test: until then the UK taxes your worldwide income wherever in Kuala Lumpur you sit. What stays UK-taxable: UK rental profits, gains on UK property and the State Pension. And the 1996 treaty, under which UK occupational and personal pensions are taxable only in Malaysia once you are treaty-resident there.
The traps are specific. An MM2H visa changes nothing on its own: UK residence is only broken under the Statutory Residence Test, and retirees cannot use the full-time work test, so they rely on the sufficient ties test, where a kept UK home and long summer visits add up. Split-year treatment is claimed on the SA109, not the P85, and HMRC's free online service cannot file that page. A UK property sale carries a 60-day report. A treaty pension claim needs an NT code or repayment claim. Leave after at least four UK-resident years out of seven, come back within five, and the temporary non-residence rules can bite. We plan all of it first, and the guides below carry the detail.
Everything is handled remotely, with year-round support and direct access to the adviser. Jordan Onraet-Wells, the founder, has over 10 years of experience including 7 at a Big Four firm, and the practice is rated 5.0 on Google from 19 reviews, with clients across six continents. Fees are fixed and agreed in writing before any work starts: non-resident and expat tax returns are £550, personal tax returns start from £350 and complex returns from £750, with advisory work quoted as a fixed fee upfront. Never an hourly rate. Start with the free 30-minute clarity call and we will tell you what it costs to get right.
What We Do
Handled for you, end to end
- The departure-year Self Assessment return with the SA109 residence pages and the split-year claim, which HMRC's free online service cannot file
- Statutory Residence Test planning for a Malaysia move, the sufficient ties test for MM2H retirees, and timing disposals around the five-year temporary non-residence window
- NRL1 applications so your UK rent can be paid without 20% deducted once HMRC approves, the landlord return each year, and the 60-day report when you sell
- Article 19 pension claims under the 1996 UK-Malaysia treaty: the NT code or repayment claim, with the State Pension exception explained
- Arrival-year planning if you move from Malaysia to the UK: the split-year case, the four-year FIG regime and the SA109 that claims both
- The UK and cross-border lead, coordinating a vetted local adviser wherever Malaysian filing or advice has to happen in-country

Moving to Malaysia from the UK: the 2026/27 tax guide
Malaysia taxes territorially, exempts most foreign income received by resident individuals until the end of 2036, and levies no capital gains tax on individuals outside real property. The 1996 UK treaty then hands taxing rights over most UK pensions to Malaysia. The UK exit is where the planning lives.
