Expat Tax Adviser: New Zealand
A Chartered UK tax adviser for New Zealand, in both directions
Departure-year returns, NRL1 and landlord returns, the 60-day property report and the treaty pension claim, handled personally from London on fixed fees agreed before any work starts.
The Short Answer
Horizon UK Tax Solutions is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) practice in London that handles the UK side of a life between Britain and New Zealand, whether you are leaving the UK, already in New Zealand with UK rent, property or pensions, or moving the other way. Three things decide the UK tax here. Your status under the Statutory Residence Test, not the one-way flight. What you leave behind, because UK rental profits and gains on UK residential property stay UK-taxable. And the UK-New Zealand treaty, giving New Zealand sole taxing rights over UK pensions of every type once you are resident there and the claim is in place.
The traps are specific. Split-year treatment applies only if your facts fit a statutory case, claimed on the SA109 pages HMRC's free online service cannot file. A letting agent or tenant deducts basic-rate tax from your rent until HMRC approves your NRL1. Sell UK residential property and you report and pay within 60 days of completion, even once non-resident. UK PAYE stays on your pension until HMRC processes form New Zealand-Individual. Return within five years, having been UK resident in at least four of the seven tax years before leaving, and the temporary non-residence rule can pull gains realised abroad back into UK tax. We handle each, on time.
Everything is handled remotely, which suits the time difference. You work directly with the founder, a CTA with over 10 years of experience including 7 at a Big Four firm, with year-round support rather than a once-a-year filing. Fees are fixed and agreed in writing before any work starts. A non-resident or expat tax return is £550 fixed. Advisory work, such as a departure plan or the treaty pension claim, is quoted as a fixed fee upfront. There is never an hourly rate. The practice is rated 5.0 on Google from 19 reviews and works with clients across six continents. Start with the free 30-minute clarity call.
What We Do
Handled for you, end to end
- Telling HMRC you are leaving, by P85 or through the departure-year return with the SA109 residence pages and your split-year claim
- NRL1 applications so your UK rent is paid gross, and the annual non-resident landlord return while you live in New Zealand
- The 60-day Capital Gains Tax report and payment when you sell UK residential property after becoming non-resident
- The UK-New Zealand treaty claim on form New Zealand-Individual, so UK tax comes off your pension, including the State Pension and government service pensions
- Arrival-year planning for moves from New Zealand to the UK: arriver split-year cases and the FIG regime claim, up to four years of relief
- Timing disposals and pension withdrawals against the five-year temporary non-residence rule, and coordinating a vetted New Zealand adviser for the local side
