UK Tax for Switzerland
A Chartered UK tax adviser for life between the UK and Switzerland
UK tax returns, residence advice and treaty planning for people moving to Switzerland, Swiss residents with UK income, and those arriving in the UK from Switzerland. Fixed fees agreed first.
The Short Answer
Horizon UK Tax Solutions is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) practice handling the UK side of a move between the UK and Switzerland: the year-of-move return, ongoing UK filings and treaty claims, on fixed fees agreed first. Your UK residence is settled by the Statutory Residence Test, not by a Swiss permit or home. UK rent and UK property gains stay within UK tax after you leave. The 5-year temporary non-residence rule can reach back to tax gains on assets you already held, and certain pension income, realised while away, if you were UK-resident in at least four of the seven tax years before leaving and return within five years.
The traps are specific. UK residential property sold after you leave must be reported, and the tax paid, within 60 days of completion, even if nothing is due. Rent from a UK property sits in the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme, so your agent deducts tax until HMRC approves an NRL1. UK pensions are not simply UK-taxed: the treaty usually gives Switzerland the right to tax private, occupational and State pensions, while government-service pensions generally stay with the UK. A split-year claim only works if your facts meet one of the statutory cases. We handle each of these, including the SA109 residence pages that HMRC's free online service cannot file.
Everything is handled remotely, from London, with direct access to the adviser and year-round support. Fees are fixed and agreed in writing before any work starts: non-resident and expat tax returns are £550, personal returns start from £350 and complex returns from £750, and advisory work such as a pre-departure residence review is quoted as one fixed figure upfront. There is never an hourly rate. Where filing or advice has to happen in Switzerland, we lead on the UK and cross-border position and coordinate a vetted local specialist. The practice is rated 5.0 on Google from 19 reviews. Start with a free 30-minute clarity call.
What We Do
Handled for you, end to end
- Year-of-move Self Assessment return in either direction, with the SA109 residence pages, the split-year claim and form P85 when you leave
- Pre-departure residence review: the Statutory Residence Test, the 5-year temporary non-residence rule and the timing of any disposals or pension drawdown while away
- NRL1 application so your UK rent is paid gross, then the annual non-resident Self Assessment return (the return is £550 fixed)
- The 60-day UK property disposal return for any UK residential property you sell from Switzerland, due whether or not tax is payable
- UK pension treaty position: which pensions Switzerland taxes, which stay UK-taxable, and the Switzerland/Individual claim for relief at source
- Arrival planning for moves from Switzerland to the UK: the arriver split-year cases, day counts and whether the four-year FIG regime is open to you
