The Short Answer

Horizon UK Tax Solutions is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) practice in London handling the UK side of a life connected to Portugal: British people moving there, anyone in Portugal with UK rent, pensions or property, and people moving to the UK from Portugal. Three rules decide most outcomes. UK residence ends under the Statutory Residence Test, not on the day you fly. The new UK-Portugal treaty, in force since 29 December 2025, sends UK private and State pensions to Portugal once you are resident there, while government service pensions generally stay taxable in the UK. And NHR is closed to new arrivals: its successor, IFICI, excludes foreign pensions.

The traps are procedural. Split-year treatment is not automatic and is not triggered by the P85: it is claimed on the SA109, naming the right one of eight statutory cases. UK rent stays UK-taxable, and the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme can withhold tax unless HMRC approves gross payment. Sell UK residential property after leaving and the Non-Resident Capital Gains Tax report and payment are due within 60 days of completion. Return within roughly five years, having been UK resident in at least four of the seven tax years before leaving, and temporary non-residence rules can pull gains back into UK tax. We plan all of this before you fix a departure date.

Everything is handled remotely from London, with clients across six continents and year-round support. You deal directly with the founder, a CTA with over 10 years of experience including 7 at a Big Four firm. Fees are fixed and agreed in writing before any work starts: non-resident and expat tax returns are £550, personal returns start from £350 and complex returns from £750, and advisory work is quoted as a fixed fee upfront. Horizon leads on the UK and cross-border position and coordinates vetted local specialists wherever filing or advice has to happen in Portugal. Rated 5.0 on Google from 19 reviews. What We Do

Handled for you, end to end

  • Departure-year filings: form P85 where it applies, the Self Assessment return with SA109 residence pages, and the split-year claim under the right statutory case
  • Treaty claims to switch UK tax off your private and State pensions once you are Portuguese resident, supported by proof of Portuguese residence
  • Non-resident landlord returns and NRL1 applications so your UK rent is paid gross while you live in Portugal, with the profit reported through Self Assessment
  • 60-day Non-Resident Capital Gains Tax report when you sell UK residential property from Portugal, including rebasing to the 5 April 2015 value where it applies
  • Arrival-year planning for people moving to the UK from Portugal: the Statutory Residence Test, arrival split-year cases and the four-year FIG regime where you qualify
  • Exit planning around the five-year temporary non-residence window, coordinating a Portugal-qualified adviser on IFICI eligibility and Portuguese residence timing
