The Short Answer

Horizon UK Tax Solutions is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) practice handling the UK side of a life connected to the United States: Britons moving to America, anyone in the USA with UK property, pensions or income, and Americans arriving in the UK. Three issues dominate. Once you become a US tax resident, the United States taxes your worldwide income, not just US earnings. A US citizen in the UK files a Form 1040 every year alongside UK Self Assessment, with the treaty and foreign tax credits relieving most double tax. And Article 17 of the UK-US treaty decides who taxes a 401(k), an IRA or a SIPP.

The traps are procedural and dated. Sell a UK property after you leave and a non-resident CGT return is due within 60 days of completion, even with no gain. UK rent falls into the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme, with 20% deducted unless HMRC approves an NRL1 application. Split-year treatment is claimed on the SA109, never automatically, and HMRC's free service cannot file that page. Since 12 March 2025 HMRC also taxes a UK resident on lump sums from taxable US pension plans, with credit for US tax paid. A UK limited company becomes a controlled foreign corporation once its US-resident owner holds more than half of it, a decision for before departure. We handle each, in the right order.

Working with Horizon is simple. Everything is handled remotely, with year-round support and direct access to Jordan Onraet-Wells, a CTA with over 10 years of experience including 7 at a Big Four firm. Fees are fixed and agreed in writing before any work starts: a non-resident or expat return is £550, personal returns from £350, complex returns from £750, advisory work quoted as a fixed fee upfront. Never an hourly rate. Horizon leads on the UK and cross-border position and coordinates vetted US specialists where a US filing is needed; it does not prepare US returns. Rated 5.0 on Google from 19 reviews. Start with a free 30-minute clarity call.

What We Do

Handled for you, end to end

  • Departure-year Self Assessment with the SA109 residence pages and split-year claim, or form P85 where no return is due
  • Non-resident landlord returns and NRL1 applications so UK rent reaches you gross instead of with 20% deducted at source
  • The non-resident CGT return on a UK property sale, filed and paid within 60 days of completion even when nothing is due
  • Drawing a UK pension from the USA: the Form US-Individual 2002 claim and NT code so your SIPP is paid gross under Article 17(1)
  • Arrival-year planning for Americans moving to the UK: residence start date, split-year claim, and whether a FIG claim saves anything once US tax is counted
  • Reporting 401(k), IRA, Roth and US Social Security income on your UK return, sharing the figures with your US preparer so credits line up

From Clients in This Position

After moving to the UK (Scotland) from the US, I didn’t realise what kind of tax I would be facing but I thought “Hey! Self assessment tax return can’t be that hard right?” Well, it is. Well, then I found Jordan. Life got really simple after that. Look up the company on the website and setup a clarity call. I know you won’t be disappointed. It only sucks that I can’t give him more than 5 stars.
